War
'War' is an American funk band from Long Beach, California, known for several hit songs, including "Spill the Wine", "The World Is a Ghetto", "The Cisco Kid", and "Why Can't We Be Friends?". The band was formed in 1969 by record producer Jerry Goldstein and musician Eric Burdon, former lead vocalist of the British rock band 'The Animals'.
Their music is an eclectic blend of rock, funk, jazz, R&B, soul, and Latin music, reflecting the diverse cultural backgrounds of the band members. The original lineup consisted of Eric Burdon, Howard Scott, B.B. Dickerson, Lonnie Jordan, Lee Oskar, Charles Miller, and Harold Brown.
War's commercial success peaked in the 70s with the release of the albums 'The World Is a Ghetto' and 'Why Can't We Be Friends?'. Both albums were hugely popular, with 'The World Is a Ghetto' becoming the best-selling album of 1973. The band continued to release music throughout the 80s and 90s, though with less commercial success.
Despite numerous lineup changes over the years, War continues to tour and make music. Their unique sound and impactful lyrics have left a lasting legacy in the music industry, influencing many artists across different genres. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2008.
