The Pointer Sisters
The Pointer Sisters, a powerhouse American singing group, achieved incredible success in the 1970s and 80s with their crossover style that spanned multiple genres from R&B to disco, pop, and more. Originating from Oakland, California, the group initially included sisters Anita, Bonnie, and June, with Ruth later joining them. Growing up in a musically inclined family, their tunes initially featured elements of gospel and rock & roll, reflecting the music they grew up with.
The Pointer Sisters' versatility shone with hit songs such as "Yes We Can Can" from their 1973 debut album and the country crossover "Fairytale," which won them a Grammy for best country vocal performance by a group in 1974. Bonnie, who was a founding member, departed the group in 1977 to pursue a solo career. Despite her sister's leaving, the trio (and sometimes quartet) continued their success with tracks like "I'm So Excited," "Jump (For My Love)," and the ever-popular "He's So Shy"—earning three Grammy Awards amidst multiple chart-topping hits.
Anita Pointer passed away at 74 in 2023, while Bonnie Pointer sadly left us at 69 in 2020. Ruth, the sole original member from the original sister line-up, keeps the music alive with her daughters, Issa and Sadako. Their artistic range, combined with their determination and influence across various musical genres, cement the Pointer Sisters' legacy in the history of entertainment. They've been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, further cementing their place in the cultural landscape.
