Insane Clown Posse (ICP) is an American hip hop duo from Detroit, Michigan. The group is composed of two members, Joseph Bruce and Joseph Utsler, who perform under the respective personas of the "wicked clowns" Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope. ICP is known for their elaborate live performances, horror-themed lyrics, and the distinctive makeup they wear during shows.
ICP formed in 1989, initially using the name Inner City Posse. They changed their name to Insane Clown Posse in 1992 and adopted the horrorcore genre. Their first album, "Carnival of Carnage," was released in 1992, introducing the dark, supernatural, and horror-themed lyrics that became their trademark.
The duo gained significant recognition for their elaborate live performances, which often feature open acts from wrestlers and circus performers. Their fanbase, known as 'Juggalos,' is famously dedicated, often painting their faces in clown makeup to match the band's aesthetic.
ICP's discography includes the Joker's Cards series, a collection of concept albums that follows a mythical Dark Carnival, each album representing a different card. The series is a significant part of the group's mythology.
Despite controversy and criticism, Insane Clown Posse has achieved two platinum and five gold albums, and sold over 6.5 million records in the US alone. Their influence on underground and horrorcore hip hop is undeniable, and their distinctive style and dedicated fanbase have made them a significant force in the music industry.
