Ice Nine Kills is an American metalcore band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 2002. The group was initially founded by high school friends Spencer Charnas and Jeremy Schwartz. The band's name is derived from Kurt Vonnegut's novel "Cat's Cradle," in reference to a fictional substance that freezes everything it touches.
The band's early years were spent experimenting with a mix of pop punk and ska, resulting in a couple of self-released EPs. However, their sound evolved towards heavier, metalcore influences with the release of their first full-length album, "Last Chance to Make Amends," in 2006.
Ice Nine Kills gained significant popularity with the release of their second album, "Safe is Just a Shadow," in 2010. The album was re-recorded and re-released in 2017, showcasing the band's growth and development.
Their 2015 album, "Every Trick in the Book," marked a creative turning point for the band, with each song based on a piece of classic literature. This concept was further explored in their 2018 album, "The Silver Scream," where every track is inspired by a different horror film.
Over the years, the band has undergone several lineup changes with Spencer Charnas as the only consistent member, serving as the lead vocalist. Known for their energetic performances and unique blend of metalcore and post-hardcore elements, Ice Nine Kills has carved out a distinct niche within the heavy music scene.
