Helmet is an influential American alternative metal band, originating from New York City in 1989. The band was formed by vocalist and lead guitarist Page Hamilton, known for his distinctive approach to guitar and innovative use of drop tunings and odd time signatures. Helmet's original line-up included Henry Bogdan on bass, Peter Mengede on guitar, and John Stanier on drums.
Their debut album 'Strap It On' was released in 1990 under independent label Amphetamine Reptile Records, earning them recognition in the underground music scene. However, it was their major label debut, 'Meantime' (1992), that brought them mainstream success. The album's title track became a Top 20 hit on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.
Helmet's style is characterized by heavy, repetitive riffs and Hamilton's introspective and straightforward lyrics. Their music significantly influenced the nu metal, post-hardcore, and alternative metal genres, inspiring bands like Tool, Pantera, and Deftones.
Despite line-up changes and hiatuses, Helmet has continued to produce music, with Hamilton remaining the constant member. They have released eight studio albums as of 2021. Helmet's contribution to the alternative metal genre has cemented their status as one of the most influential bands of the 90s.
